Roefs had an impressive breakout season in the Eredivisie last term, making 32 appearances and keeping 10 clean sheets. This caught the attention of several top teams, but Roefs chose to join the Premier League and says he's excited for the challenge ahead.
“I'm really proud to have signed for Sunderland. Joining a big club with a rich history is a great opportunity for me, and I'm looking forward to the Premier League experience. Last season was my first time as a senior goalkeeper, and I was happy with how it went. To be part of this journey at Sunderland is special, and I'm excited for the season ahead.”
Sunderland agreed to pay an initial £9.5m for Roefs, with an additional £2.5m in add-ons included in the transfer deal. The signing marks the end of a long search for a new goalkeeper, and manager Regis le Bris is optimistic about the young player's potential.
“Robin is a talented young goalkeeper who's been in high demand this summer. We were impressed by his desire to join Sunderland, and we're excited to have him on board. We're looking forward to working with him to help him reach his full potential at the Stadium of Light.”
